Fight Night! Pietro vs. DMD
On Thursday March 7, 2013, over 600 members of the local community gathered together to join the fight against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The event, hosted and organized by Pietrosfight.org, to help raise money and awareness in an effort to end DMD. Monies raised from Pietrosfight.org will go towards research in the hopes of finding a cure for young boys like Pietro Scarso, the three and a half year old organization’s namesake, who are diagnosed and suffering from this debilitating disease. The El Caribe Country Club in Mill Basin Brooklyn welcomed the event and showed its dedication to excellence by providing attentive staff, accommodating hosts, and superb dining.
Countless donations and contributions were made from local vendors including Bay Ridge Honda, who graciously donated a 24-month lease on a 2013 Honda Accord. Steven Rittas from Classie Sounds provided the event with fantastic dance music to keep everyone on their feet, while Beyond Dance did a dance routine that had everyone amazed, Vince Segalla from Elite Photographed it and Stas from Factor 5 Films videoed it all night long!
When Manni and Dayna started Pietros Fight they knew that in order to be successful they needed to enlist the help of the leaders in our community. They were fortunate enough to get a meeting with Senator Marty Golden. They went into the meeting asking Senator Golden if he would attend our event and help us spread awareness among our community. Without hesitation he jumped in with two feet, partnered with Pietrosfight and vowed to fight until DMD is brought to his knees. He introduced a resolution into the senate on Pietros behalf and was passed unanimously. Bay Ridge is lucky to have a leader that truly cares about his community. The Scarso’s were honored to have partnered with Senator Martin Golden and have presented him with a gift, a copy of the resolution he passed in Albany, two months prior. Also in attendance was Laurie Cahill, Bay Ridge resident and former Muay Thai fighter who came out of retirement for Pietro. During her return fight, Cahill knocked out her opponent and donated all of her winnings to Pietrosfight.org. Dr. Michael G. Vitale MD MPH is the Chief of the Pediatric Spine and Scoliosis Service and Associate Chief of the Division of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at the Children’s Hospital of New York- Presbyterian recently joined Pietrosfight.org board and spoke a few words about the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and SMA- another tough childhood disease. Msgr. Jamie ended the speeches with a prayer and a blessing.
All 600 guests of Pietro’s Fight Night went home with a goody bag sponsored by the NJ Devils. Included in the bags were a cut and blow dry from Pilo Arts Salon, 3-month gym membership to Dolphin Fitness, the latest copy of Industry Magazine, gift certificates to Bay Ridge eateries and shops such as A.L.C Italian Grocery, Bagel Boy, Kaleidoscope, Jet Beauty, cookies from Cutestcookie.com, and some Pietrosfight.org personalized items.
In its inaugural year, the event was a huge success and it won’t stop there.
Pietrosfight.org is always updating its website and social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter to keep their followers updated with Pietro, his events, and the medical development of the disease. Pietro Scarso’s fighters went above and beyond to make this event a huge success aiding him into his fight. “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being a vital part of this historic and bold effort,” said Pietro’s mom & dad. The participation and donations in Fight Night, Pietro vs. DMD March 7th 2013 fundraiser, helped raised over the grant of $75,000.00 made towards Halo Therapeutics. Halo Therapeutics is a biotechnology company that is a unique collaboration between nonprofit foundations and a world class team of drug development experts.
